Well-Rounded Sunday

Today we had nature in the morning and culture in the afternoon!

We went on a hike through a nature area in Loma Linda.  Owen is all into climbing mountains at the moment.  We indulged him with a short trek up a hill.  Here he is throwing a rock.  One of many.

Waving at our shadows.

Making ants happy by dropping nilla wafer crumbs.

and chasing a stink bug into a hole.

We went to a classical music for kids concert at UCR this afternoon.  Owen did pretty good and hung out on the blanket for at least three songs.  It was actually a good little presentation.  The songs were abbreviated and there was a narrator telling stories of the compositions between each.

Thirsty Owen?

Watching the show.

Backyard again

Here are some progress shots of the backyard.

Yes, he has crocs.  We're OK with that, and he loves them.

This is our "tropical" corner in the making.

Hanging in the hammock.

View of the back fence.  The plum tree (just past the trash can) and the orange tree down near the end are new.  That bushy pine tree in the corner is going to go.  We're planning on some sort of fort made from natural materials for that area.

Side-yard.  Mark will be sinking those pavers to make a threshold.  We planted that maple in the middle there.  Mark is also taking down that out-of-control bush at the end.  Other than that, our plans for this area are top secret.

Stories

Nothing exciting to report, so I thought I would just give you a few little stories I've been meaning to relay.

We are gearing up for our vacation to South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah in June.  Owen is very excited because we are going to see Mt. Owen in Grand Teton National Park.  Mark has a picture of Mt. Owen on his desktop right now.  In the picture there are two other peaks surrounding it.  Owen sees the photo and says, "There is Mt. Owen, Mt. Daddy and Mt. Mommy.  We'll see them in June on vacation".  That's right buddy.

Owen has become our little hypnotist.  Whenever one of us is laying down, he stares very intently and says "sleep".  We are then expected to close our eyes and keep them closed until he awakens us.  We can lay there with our eyes closed for a long time while he tiptoes around and does who knows what.  One time Mark was laying on the floor on his back, Owen told him to sleep, so he was just laying there.  Very quietly, Owen straddled Mark's stomach and sat there for the longest time.  We think he just likes giving us commands.  :-)

He has also started giving toys and other objects names.  Some of the cutest include: Silly the Alligator, Hickey the Tree, and my favorite, George Goes Camping.  He has a book called "George Goes Camping", so he decided to use that name for a little horse that Nana gave him.

Owen is also a big time collector.  You would be hard pressed to find him without at least two toys in his hand at any moment.  Most times he is carrying around three or four things on a rotating basis.  He never had a "lovey" or just one special toy.  Instead he finds comfort and security in every single toy he has.  And everything beyond toys too, like tongs and other kitchen utensils, rocks and sticks, etc...  Even if he can barely hold everything he wants, he is not deterred.  As a result, my car, Mark's car and each room of the house ends up strewn with various things that have been in his possession that day.

At Owen's school they have a music teacher who visits all the classrooms.  Her name is Ms. Kim.  Owen LOVES Ms. Kim and comes home with lots of new songs to sing.  Lately though, he has developed a flair for the dramatic.  Each song ends like the finale of a Broadway musical. He can stretch out that end note pretty long.  It's very cute, but a little embarrassing in public.

His vocabulary is growing every day.  His sentences are getting scarily sophisticated too.  I'm not sure I'm ready for him to be so OLD.  But there are still a few words that he can't quite get. For Owen a lawnmower is a "mowlawner", a catcher's mitt is a "catch mitter", and a baseball bat is a "base bat".  Heee heee.

Last story....we're getting more and more practice at hide and seek.  Owen loves the "find" part and will even tell us where to hide.  We're still working on the concept.  When Owen hides it is never too challenging to find him.  When I say "Where could Owen be?", I can be sure to hear the answer.  "I'm in the family room", I hear a little voice say.  Like I said, still working on it....

Much love!

Milestones

What do you do with a kid who WANTS a time out??!!  Owen hits the cat and then looks right at me and says..."green chair?"  (that's where he goes for time out).  He is misbehaving just so I will put him in the green chair.  I don't think this is effective punishment....
Must outsmart child....   :-)

Owen is doing really well at school.  They are learning to recognize their own and the other friends names.  His teacher told me he can identify at least 14 out of the 24 names.  She was very impressed!

He is also using his imagination so much lately!  It's very cute to watch him as he makes up various scenarios with toys and other random objects.  Most of the scenarios revolve around Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (his favorite show).  We are amazed everyday how much he has grown!

Crusing his new mower down the block.

First fort made out of a giant box....score!

Picking flowers out of the neighbor's yard.
Good thing that house is still vacant.

He ended up with quite an impressive bouquet.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday we went to church to see Nana sing in the choir.  Owen did really good and sat through almost the entire service.  Nana had to sing in all three services, so we waited for her to come home and then we did the Easter baskets and egg hunt.

So cute!!

At church they had some activities for the kids.  Owen loved playing with the balloons and eggs in this area.  He wasn't too interested in the animals, for once, and wanted to keep playing with the eggs.

Easter Basket!
Thanks to Nana & Papa, Grandma & Grandpa, Grandma Bakery, and Aunt Pat & Uncle Ken for contributing to the goodies in there!!

The egg hunt begins.  Uncle Guy had fun hiding eggs at Owen's eye level and giving him a challenge.  No eggs laying in the middle of the grass around here.  Even the adults had a little trouble finding them all.

Uncle Guy hid an egg inside a chewed up dog ball.  Thanks a bunch!

Nana, Erin and Mommy watching the action.

Easter Saturday

Visited the Thompson's in Bakersfield for Easter. Owen had a great time despite the fever that showed up on Sunday. As of this posting he is still sick, we have a Dr. appointment tonight to rule out another ear infection. Luckily he is in good spirits.

Nana and I tempted fate and set up the egg coloring inside the house. Mark was gone rafting on the Kern river, so he wasn't there to act as our voice of reason. Owen did OK, there was some splashing of dye, but nothing major. We quickly figured out it was less messy to let him dye the eggs with his hands and just forget the spoon. We started out with 18 eggs, but Owen devoured two before we even got started.

Notice the "hovering mommy hand" off to the left.

much better

Nana put some chemicals in the spa and it was overtaken by these awesome bubbles. He spent a good half hour putting the bubbles on the ground and stomping on them.

Fontana Nature Center

We took a short trip to the Fontana Nature Center last Sunday.  Owen had a great time, there were ducks of course....  He also tackled a pretty good little hill.

I love this picture!  The snake is climbing up the tank and Owen is in awe.

He thought this was a buffalo.

This place rocks!

Starting our hike.  He looks pretty determined.  He did really good and hiked the majority of the way on his own.  He carried that giraffe and the plastic orange thing the entire way too.

Surveying our progress and taking in the view.

Up at the "top".  We told him this was the top in order the limit the time Mark had to carry him back down the hill.

View from the summit.  The nature center and little lake is off to the right.
